Generative engine optimization (GEO)

A working label for improving how content may be represented in generated answers.

By GEO Primer editorialPublished Reviewed

Scope

Editorial guidance for English-language marketing teams. Examples are illustrative, not measured results. No citation, ranking, traffic, or revenue outcome is guaranteed.

Meaning

GEO is a label for work concerned with content visibility or representation in generative answers. The original GEO research defines an experimental optimization framework and visibility metrics. In practice, people use the label more broadly, so ask what task and outcome a speaker means.

Use it carefully

“We are doing GEO” could mean fixing access, improving evidence, or logging brand mentions. Those activities require different checks. In a brief, replace the acronym with the actual deliverable: a reviewed comparison, a corrected product description, or an observation log.

Common mistake

Treating the label as a distinct ranking system with a known universal formula. A research finding is not a service-level guarantee for a live platform.
