Brand mention

An occurrence of a brand name under a stated observation rule.

By GEO Primer editorialPublished Reviewed

Scope

Editorial guidance for English-language marketing teams. Examples are illustrative, not measured results. No citation, ranking, traffic, or revenue outcome is guaranteed.

Meaning

A brand mention records that a name appeared. Decide whether your rule includes aliases, product names, misspellings, negative descriptions, or only the exact organization name. Keep enough context to review borderline cases.

Example

An answer can name a product while citing a competitor comparison. Log the name occurrence and the citation destination separately. If the description is inaccurate, record that rather than counting the mention as uncomplicated success.

Common mistake

Calling every mention a recommendation, or treating an absent name as proof that the underlying page was inaccessible. Mentions are a narrow observation. Their interpretation depends on the question, answer, and counting rule.
